Tanning Tips

1. Build a Base

When:

Start tanning in a bed or outdoors at least 3 weeks before the contest, 2-3 times a week.

Caution:

- Stop tanning the week of your show and be careful not to get burned!

-  Peeling skin causes patches and tan lines CANNOT BE FIXED!

2. Exfoliate
When:

Start several weeks prior to the contest.

How and What:

Use an oil-free exfoliating product or a washcloth, terry cloth fabric is the BEST exfoliator.

Caution:

- Make sure to exfoliate evenly!!!

- If an area that has been exfoliated still has dead skin, then that area once covered in tanning product, will be darker than the new skin. This will result in a “patchy” look, for which there is NO FIX!

3. Shave or Wax
When:

No later than 12 hours before your tanning appointment.

First time:

- Experiment several weeks before in order to figure out which hair removal method (shaving, waxing, hair removal product) is best for you.

- If you have burns or a rash from waxing the tan will be darker in those areas and result in a “patchy” look.

Caution:

- Once you have applied your tan, DO NOT SHAVE. If you do then you risk the tan peeling or coming off.

- Waxing is best, but if you do not know how your body will react to it or if you have sensitive skin, try it several weeks before the contest. If you have burns    or a rash from waxing the tan will be darker in those areas and result in a “patchy” look. Same for hair removal products.
- Hair removal products are best for “fuzzy” areas such as the glutes, lower back, and arms.

- “Fuzzy” areas: areas with light hair (fuzz) that you may not see until it has been sprayed with a tanning product.

4. Last Minute Details

  • Before applying your FIRST coat of tan, make certain that your skin is dry, exfoliated, and hairless. This ensures that the tan soaks evenly and perfectly into the skin.

  • WASH ARMPITS using a soaped cloth. Deodorant tends to stay on the skin and any leftover deodorant will change the color of the tan.

  • Shower and exfoliate for the LAST TIME right BEFORE your tanning appointment.

  • AFTER the final shower DO NOT use Moisturizer or Deodorant!!!! If you have oily skin, you may want to wipe down with rubbing alcohol, which dries out the skin.
